Call for Composers

Deadline: Midnight - 31 December 2021

The London Bel Canto Festival is offering a commission for a set of three songs for voice, piano and a non-obligatory third instrument of the composer’s choice. This opportunity is limited to composers from Black, Asian, MENA and ethnic minorities typically underrepresented in classical music.

The whole set should be no shorter than 12 mins of music. We are looking for a non-atonal context (a functional harmonic context is not a must, and we are not looking for a pastiche, but tonality should be discernible). We are looking for someone with a keen interest in writing for the voice, especially the bel canto voice in a 21st century context, and whose work demonstrates this. Aesthetics and expressive power are paramount in our decision-making.

You will receive a commission fee of £500. Please note, that this fee is NOT prize money. You are being commissioned to write new works for our context, rather than receiving a prize for an already existing work.

To apply, please send us a few of your most recent works for voice that reflect your own creative voice and tell us in a letter (no more than one page) why you want to work with us and what your creative vision for this commission would be. If you do not have any existing works that show this interest, please tell us in your letter why you are applying.

You will have the opportunity to work with singers and receive guidance and support in writing for bel canto voices. You do not need to be from a strong classical background. We welcome people from all musical backgrounds including composition for film, etc., but you should be interested in the bel canto voice and have an awareness of whether or not your work can accommodate it.
