An intimate invitation only concert at the National Liberal Club

We want to thank our friends and patrons for helping us make the London Bel Canto Festival possible so we are hosting a private black tie event at the National Liberal Club with opera, Bellinis and canapes. Our emerging artists are winners from the Joan Sutherland Richard Bonynge Foundation, International Opera Awards Foundation, finalists in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, Alfredo Kraus International Singing Competition, Orpheus Vocal Competition, and several others. They will perform stunning works of virtuosity and splendor including arias from Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and more.

Find out how to become a patron to be invited to our private events!

'Cards and Kisses' sets a poem by John Lyly (1553 – 1606) and is one of three humorous and light-hearted love songs written for piano and alto/countertenor. It thematises a card game between the lyrical I’s love interest and Cupid, the Roman deity associated with love and desire, in which the latter ultimately loses all his charms to the lady in question. (To an Elizabethan who studied the Classics, her name Campaspe apparently suggests an extra-marital crush – but one would not wish to inflict any further injustices upon the already unsuccessfully love-struck poet by wrongly accusing him of such.) The setting attempts to catch the heated back-and-forth of a game with high stakes rhythmically and unpredictability in predominantly quartal harmony whilst hopefully adding the grain of salt which the purposefully exaggerated theatrical nature of the text also evokes.

Clara Fiedler composed 'Stardust' for the 2018 London Bel Canto Festival which was premièred at Cadogan Hall 18 August 2018. You can watch it below performed by soprano Simone Victor.
